Earthquake construction is a branch of architectural engineering concerned with making sure structures withstand as severe an earthquake shock as possible given the materials available. When the structure in question is a human habitation, the questions of surviving earthquake damage become much more serious. Examples of inhabited structures collapsing during earthquakes abound and are sadly all too frequent. Areas of the world frequently hit by fatal earthquake damage include Japan, Turkey, Algeria, and countless other regions on or near tectonic plate boundaries.Earlier in mankind's history (during the Neolithic, for instance), mankind lived in tents, which can withstand earthquakes quite well. We moved on to more comfortable structures of timber, mud brick, limestone, wattle and daub, and even just stacked rubble.Some of these materials can be used form solid, earthquake resistant structures. The important part is to use them wisely and with an understanding of how ea! rthquakes really apply stresses to structures in practice. A structure might have all the appearances of stability, yet offer nothing but danger when an earthquake strikes. The crucial fact is that for safety, earthquake resistant construction techniques are as important as using the correct materials.The specific mode of failure in an earthquake for most structures is the lateral (sideways) shaking. It frequently collapses walls, or moves them enough that the roof displaces and falls in. Both of these effects, obviously, can be deadly to any occupants.

I have a few VMUs (this being my favorite one what with it being green and all) and all of them are wonderful little accessories. Yeah it looks like a Tamagotchi, but so what? This is the coolest memory card I've ever seen. You can play a few mini-games on it if you have a game that features one, copy files to other peoples' VMUs on-the-go, and files almost never corrupt/get deleted. In fact, in the 3 years I've had my Dreamcast, not a single save has vanished on me for no reason at all. If I start up a new game, and it doesn't save because the first VMU in my controller is full, I just take it out while the game's on and swap it with the one in slot 2 and that's all. The game doesn't freeze or anything like a ps2 or GC would do. I haven't played that many DC games (no more than 35), so I don't know how many games take advantage of the VMU during gameplay. The one I know about from experience is Resident Evil Code: Veronica. While in the controller, the VMU displays your he! alth status right there. 'very handy instead of just going to the menu every few minutes to make sure you're doing ok. There are sure to be a lot of other games that do something like this. Shenmue sort of helps with the VMU: displaying directions on how to do a new move while you're learning it. Don't worry about having to look down from the action just to see the controller's window, it's very easy to get in mind, and it's not a chore at all. About space being an issue...there aren't that many games that take up 5/6 of the memory. Sports games do tend to take up a lot of space, and a few select titles (Shenmue and Seaman), but that's about it. And if you're a big sports gamer, then I reccomend picking up the 4x memory card so you have everything right there instead of swapping VMUs constantly. The only issue that could be a real gripe is if you play a lot of mini-games. The reason being that the VMU's batteries die very quickly. I bought a new one (still in the box) not ! that long ago, and they died within a week. Actually, probably! more li ke 5 days. But when they die, that won't affect your saves. The batteries just run the VMU's screen when not being used while playing on the DC. With all that in mind, go out and buy a couple more of these. They're incredibly cheap now and hold a lot of space. Good job Sega.

A different gallon was used for ale and beer, the ale gallon, which in modern times was 282 cubic inches (2 ? 3 ? 47 in?), which does not divide the 58,212 in? nicely.

This is a great complement to the David Easton Book.Easton's book seems geared toward convincing you to build with rammed earth (and it does a great job at that).This book has more hard facts, details on building forms, and has detailed procedures on testing soil, formwork, plasticity, and completed walls.The author also goes into detail on how to protect your walls, things to watch out for, etc.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about wanting to build with earth.I'm surprised this book isn't easier to get!

Rammed earth construction is an old construction|building method that has seen a revival in recent years as people seek low-impact building materials and natural building methods. Traditionally, rammed earth buildings are common in arid regions where wood is in scare supply.Walls are constructed from a mixture of soil|earth that has suitable proportions of sand, gravel and clay sometimes with an added stabiliser. Traditional stabilisers such as lime or animal blood were used to stabilise the material, but if required cement has been the stabiliser of choice for modern times.Formwork is set up creating the desired shape of the section of wall, damp material is poured in to a depth of between 100 to 250mm (4 to 10 inches). A pneumatically powered backfill tamper - something like a pogo stick with a flat plate on the bottom - is then used to compact the material to around 50% of its original height. Further layers of material are added and the process is repeated until the wa! ll has reached the desired height. Once the mixture is set the forms are removed and the wall is water sealed. In modern variations of the method the rammed earth walls are constructed on top of conventional footings and a reinforced concrete base, usually with extra ground insulation from a horizontal layer of styrofoam. On of the significant benefits of rammed earth constructions is its excellent thermal mass; it heats up slowly during the day and releases its heat during the evening. This can even out daily temperature variations and reduce the need for air conditioning and heating. On the other hand, rammed earth is not a good insulator. Like brick and concrete (which also have excellent thermal mass), rammed earth must be insulated in colder climates. The thickness and density of the walls lends itself naturally to sound proofing and the materials used in the walls make them virtually fireproof.Prior to the use of cement as a stabilizer, rammed earth buildings were mos! t successful in dry climates with limited availability of buil! ding mat erials other than earth. Rammed earth has become a viable material in wetter climates, either through the use of cement stabilisation, through placing the earth walls within the weatherproof fabric of the building, or by the aplication of external insulation and weatherproofing.

It originated in (and remains largely confined to) prisons, where it can be produced cheaply, easily, and discreetly. The concoction can be made using only a plastic bag, hot running water, and a towel to conceal the pulp during fermentation. The end result has been colourfully described as a ''"vomit-flavoured wine-cooler"'', although it could be argued that flavor is not the main objective. Depending on the time spent fermenting, the sugar content, and the quality of the ingredients and preparation, pruno's alcohol content can range from as low as 2% (equivalent to a weak beer) to as high as 14% alcoholic proof|alcohol by volume.Typically, the fermenting mass of fruit -- called the ''motor'' in prison parlance (from "promoter" and from the quiet humming sound it makes as it ferments) is retaine! d from batch to batch, to make the fermentation start faster. The more sugar is added, the greater the potential for a higher alcohol content -- to a point. Beyond this point, the waste products of fermentation cause the motor to die when the yeasts outgrow their food supply. This also causes the taste of the end product to suffer. In an effort to eradicate pruno, some wardens have gone as far as banning all fresh fruit from prison cafeterias. But even this is not always enough. To illustrate the versatility of ! pruno, a variety exists that is made almost entirely from saue! rkraut a nd orange juice. Some commentators have suggested providing inmates with moderate, supervised "doses" of safe alcohol, in the spirit of conjugal visits, so that they would not be tempted to consume pruno and other potentially dangerous home-brewed spirits. However, such suggestions have never been taken seriously, and would most likely be unimplementable, given public attitudes toward drinking and fears of drunkenness and abuse of the program. Some critics have pointed out that prisoners might be encouraged to develop alcoholism, which could then be used to control them.A variety of other alcoholic prison-made potables are known to exist. The RAND Health Insurance Experiment was a comprehensive study of health care cost, utilitzation and outcome in the U.S.. It has been regarded as one of the most rigorous such studies, and is thought to provide the most persuasive evidence to date on the relative effects of health maintenance organizations and fee-for-service care on demand for health care and health care outcomes.In 1971, RAND established an insurance company using funding from the then-United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The company insured 5809 people, randomly assigned to insurance plans that either had no cost-sharing, 25, 50 or 95% copayment rates with a maximum annual payment of $1000.The study found higher copayment rates reduced spending because people did not seek care as frequently. It also found little deterioration of health, implying that people seek unnecessary care when the charge per visit is free or low. This remains a controversial point in health and health economi! cs literature.Overconsumption of health services has been cited as one of the main causes of the steadily increasing cost of health care in most countries. The study has influenced insurance companies and government health plans to shift costs from the premium to the point of care; according to the experiment, this should reduce excess demand.
